SMIP Consulting was founded by Dr. Ravi Upasani. SMIP Consulting leverages Dr. Upasani's >20 years of experience as a Medicinal Chemist and Head of Intellectual Property in delivering specialized IP services.

RAVI B. UPASANI, Ph.D.

Founder and Principal

   Dr. Upasani earned his Ph.D. in small molecule chemistry. His qualifications include a unique combination of extensive experience in medicinal chemistry and expertise in Intellectual Property.  He has drafted and filed over 150 patent applications covering small molecules and corresponding compositions of matter.

   Dr. Upasani was most recently the Senior Director of Intellectual Property at Renovis, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company and a subsidiary of Evotec, AG.  In this capacity, Dr. Upasani managed and implemented all aspects of the IP function at Renovis, including developing and implementing patent strategy; directing and participating in the drafting and prosecution of patent applications for the company, with particular concentration in the area of API’s and related small molecules; and managing the company’s extensive patent portfolio.

   Prior to his work in Intellectual Property, Dr. Upasani spent 15 years directing chemistry discovery groups for various biopharmaceutical companies and conducting research. While his research has been focused in the pharmaceutical arena, on the design of new lead compounds in different target areas and the development of structure-activity relationship (SAR), his industrial and academic research spans a broad spectrum of chemical disciplines, including industrial polymers, organo-ferromagnetic materials, super conducting materials and fullerenes.

   Dr. Upasani is a Registered Patent Agent (Reg. No. 53,712) and has extensive and diverse  experience interacting with patent examiners. Dr. Upasani has authored more than 35 publications and is an inventor on more than 15 US patents.
